About Paul Tillich Paul Tillich has been well known as a Lutheran protestant theologian.Tillich was of German-American descent and belongs to the Province of Brandenburg. Since his early life, he was very eager to discover the concepts of human existence and modern culture.Being a philosopher, a lot of Tillich’s philosophical and theological works were inspired by the fundamental ontology of Martin Heidegger, who questioned the highest categories of metaphysics. In the early ’30s, Reinhold Niebuhr founded the Fellowship of Socialist Christians, which later became Frontier Fellowship and then Christian Action. Paul Tillich, Rose Terlin, Eduard Heimann, and Sherwood Eddy were adherents of this fellowship. They acknowledged Karl Marx’s social philosophy and became rebellious against capitalist individualism.Although Tillich personally believed in young Marx’s theory of alienation and historical materialism, but surely defied the understanding of historical determinism. In the early ’30s, during the rise of Nazism, Tillich came up with the book, ‘The Socialist Decision’ (1933), which was censored by the Nazi administration. In the book, Tillich described Nazism as a political revolutionary romanticism, that includes three basic origin myths: blood, soil, and social group, which served to legitimize established social hierarchies.Dismantling all the traditional social bonds, he believed liberalism was intertwined with capitalism. He was criticized by Martin Buber’s disciple Malcolm Diamond and also by the Barthian wing of Protestantism, where they debated the concept of reducing God to the impersonal ’necessary being’. Regarding the debate, Tillich cited that critics misinterpreted his concept and how God reveals himself to mankind in existence, as the subject-object dichotomy. He elaborated on the distinction in the first chapter of his ‘Systematic Theology, Volume 1’. Some believed Tillich’s conception was too eccentric, yet as a form of pantheism or atheism.
