After living there, Clare developed a further sense of alienation. In July 1837, Clare, as recommended by his friend Taylor, went of his own volition, along with Taylor’s friend, to a private asylum called High Beach, run by Dr. Mathew Allen in Epping Fores. Clare was assured by his friend Taylor that he would have access to excellent medical care by staying there.The owner of Burghley House, Marquis of Exeter, eventually bestowed Clare 15 guineas a year for life. Following this, Clare went to London and got introduced to prominent figures of that time, such as Lord Radstock and Mrs. Emmerson, who ultimately turned out to be his patrons. He continued to visit London and met people like Thomas de Quincy, William Hazlitt, Charles Lamb, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Thomas Hood. Clare also started working on his autobiography. In 1832, Clare completed ‘Midsummer Cushion’.In 1835, ‘The Rural Muse’, Clare’s last work, was published, and it drew positive reviews from Christopher North and other reviewers, but the profits he got were too inadequate to sustain his family, i.e., his seven children and wife.During his initial years in the High Beach Asylum, John Clare had re-written poems and verses of Lord Byron titled ‘Child Harold’, and Clare’s version was titled ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage’.
