Daniel Webster was the son of Abigail and Ebenezer Webster, a farmer and regional official, who served in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War.Webster enrolled in Phillips Exeter Academy, a preparatory school in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1796. He was admitted to Dartmouth College in 1797, after studying the classics and other studies for several months under a clergyman. During his time at Dartmouth, he was the editor of the school newspaper and was proficient at public speaking. In 1800, he was chosen as the Fourth of July orator in Hanover, the college town, and the substance of the political beliefs for the development of which he became famous, were mentioned in his address.Following his graduation from Dartmouth in 1801, he worked as an apprentice for Salisbury lawyer, Thomas W. Thompson. Though he was uninterested in studying law, he believed that becoming a lawyer would enable him to live well and avoid the periods of poverty that had befallen his father. Webster temporarily resigned from the law firm to work as a schoolteacher at Fryeburg Academy in Maine, to help fund his brother Ezekiel’s studies at Dartmouth. In 1804, he accepted a post in Boston as an assistant to famed attorney, Christopher Gore.While clerking for Gore, who was active in international, national, and state politics. He learned about a variety of legal and political issues and met several New England politicians. Webster resigned after two terms in office and relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. He was a top counsel before the United States Supreme Court, winning cases such as McCulloch v. Maryland, Dartmouth College v. Woodward, and Gibbons v. Ogden. He had an impact on a number of Chief Justice John Marshall’s opinions and, as a result, the evolution of constitutional law.In 1823, Daniel Webster returned to the House of Representatives and became a staunch supporter of President John Quincy Adams.In 1827, Webster was elected to the United States Senate and collaborated with Henry Clay to form the National Republican Party in support of Adams.After Andrew Jackson defeated Adams in the presidential election of 1828, Webster became a vocal critic of Jackson’s domestic policies. Andrew Jackson issued the Proclamation to the People of South Carolina in December 1832, stating that he would not allow South Carolina to resist federal government legislation. Webster supported Jackson’s forceful attitude to the Nullification Crisis, although he disagreed with the president on the Second Bank of the United States. During the Bank War that followed, Jacksonian Democrats’ detractors founded the upstart Whig Party and ran unsuccessfully in the 1836 presidential election.After supporting Harrison in the 1840 presidential election, Webster was named Secretary of State by Harrison. He continued to serve under President Tyler, after Tyler broke with the congressional Whigs, unlike the other members of Harrison’s Cabinet. Webster negotiated the Webster–Ashburton Treaty, which addressed border disputes with Britain, while serving as Secretary of State. Webster became a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1837.In 1845, Webster was re-elected to the Senate and resumed his position as a leading congressional Whig. Webster continued as a leader of the Cotton Whigs, a movement of Northern Whigs that prioritized good relations with the South over anti-slavery efforts during the Mexican–American War.Webster’s political career was not over yet as he was named Secretary of State by President Fillmore in 1850 and he played a role in the ratification of the 1850 Compromise, which resolved various territory disputes and implemented a new fugitive slave law.By early 1852, Webster had developed cirrhosis of the liver and his failing health made it increasingly difficult for him to serve as Secretary of State. Webster returned to his Marshfield estate in September 1852, where his health continued to deteriorate due to cirrhosis and a subdural hematoma.
